MRI Technology
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the safest, most advanced forms of medical imaging technology available. A number of Nobel Peace Prizes have been awarded for the advancements discovered during the development of MRI technology.
Equipment
Ottawa Valley MRI uses a GE (General Electric) 1.5 Tesla MRI machine. This advanced MRI technology is of similar strength and technical ability as you find in many of our hospitals. The machine uses a strong magnet and radio frequency waves to show soft tissue and bony structures in the body such as the brain, abdomen, joints and reproductive organs.
The imaging produced by this technology is so detailed it is like being right inside the body.
MRI Exam
An MRI is painless, and the magnetic fields produce no known tissue damage of any kind. The MRI scanner will make loud pulsating and knocking noises at times during the exam. Patients therefore will be provided with ear plugs for their exam. Patients can communicate with our MRI technologist throughout the exam through a microphone in the MRI machine.
It is important to note that MRI exams are detailed exams for a specific part of the body. MRI exams are recommended to help provide a diagnosis for specific clinical indications and are not designed to provide whole body scans. Our Calgary and Vancouver Clinics offer CT Scans of heart, lung and colon scans. Please refer to their link for more information about CT scans:
