Patient information

MRI does not use harmful radiation nor is it invasive or painful.

IS MRI SAFE FOR EVERYONE?

While generally extremely safe there are some special considerations.  Pregnant women should not be exposed to MRI unless approved by a physician.  In addition, individuals that have worked with metal, such as sheet metal workers, welders or grinders, will require careful screening by the MRI technologist and may require an additional x-ray exam of the eyes prior to their exam. Also, people with metal plates, implants, pacemakers or surgical clips will require careful screening.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR AN MRI?

Generally, there is no special preparation required for your MRI.  However, it is best not to wear any metal jewelry or a watch.  If you have body piercing, it is best to remove this prior to your appointment. Occasionally, for some of exams, you will be asked to fast. You will be advised of this at the time of booking by our receptionist. If you suffer with claustrophobia, our technologist is highly trained at helping you through the exam.  It is also possible to arrange a pre-exam site visit to spend some time with the technologist and the MRI to become familiar with the process.  If it is felt to be necessary, you can ask your referring physician to prescribe anxiety medication that you can take just prior to going into the MRI.  In these cases, please advise Our Team and have someone accompany you to the MRI appointment and drive you home.

HOW DO I SCHEDULE AN MRI?

Ottawa Valley MRI Centre requires a referral from your physician before the MRI exam can be scheduled.  While most generic MRI referral forms are accepted, a form can be downloaded and brought to your appointment with your physician signature.

Once the completed referral form  is received at our centre, the radiologist will provide the protocol for the exam and you will be called to schedule the appointment within 24 hours.  Your appointment will be scheduled at your convenience during our business hours, Monday to Friday.

HOW MUCH DOES AN MRI COST?

The cost of your MRI will depend on the part of the body being imaged, as requested by your physician, and whether a contrast injection is required.  Contrast injections help enhance the image quality and the radiologist at tour clinic will determine if it is necessary.  You will be informed of the cost of your MRI exam prior to scheduling your appointment.

Ottawa Valley MRI Centre accepts all major credit and debit cards.  Many exams are covered by a third party (e.g. WSIB, CSST, private insurance company, lawyer).  Prior to scheduling your exam, our centre will require written authorization from that third party.
